India said that it expects Dhaka to expedite the process of verifying the nationality of undocumented Bangladesh migrants so that they can be repatriated “in a smooth manner”. More than 2,862 cases of nationality verification are pending with Bangladesh, “some for over five years”, said Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

His remarks came against the backdrop of Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman saying that Dhaka would take “whatever measures are necessary on that issue”, while responding to a question about reports of Indian border guards “pushing in” individuals into Bangladesh.

Jaiswal said that these comments must be “seen in the context of the core issue of the repatriation of illegal Bangladeshis” from India, which “obviously requires cooperation from Bangladesh”. Read on.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan said that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay had sought his supposed to form the government in Tamil Nadu. The Communist Party of India also confirmed that TVK general secretary “Bussy” Anand had sought its support.

This came as Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly asked TVK to produce documentary proof of majority support.

The TVK, on its electoral debut, on Monday emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections, winning 108 seats. However, it fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly. The VCK has two seats. The Congress, with five seats, has already pledged support for Vijay’s party.

Businessman Anil Ambani claimed before the Delhi High Court that television news channel NDTV had published “defamatory” reports about him to aid the Adani Group’s alleged attempt to take over his companies. The Gautam Adani-led Adani Group is the majority shareholder in NDTV.

Ambani alleged that the news channel had published 72 reports about him in recent months to further the Adani Group’s “predatory strategies” by creating panic in the markets, and influencing public perception of Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure. Read on.


The Bombay High Court upheld the acquittal of 22 persons in the alleged staged “encounter” killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his aide Tulsiram Prajapati, and the alleged murder of Sheikh’s wife Kauser Bi in Gujarat. A CBI court had in 2018 acquitted all persons, including 21 police officers, in the matter, saying that the prosecution had failed to prove a conspiracy.

Janata Dal (United) leader Nishant Kumar, the son of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, took oath as a minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state Cabinet. Thirty-one others were also inducted as ministers as part of the first Cabinet expansion of the Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary government.
